In 2010, North America was home to 40% of cocaine users.
According to the world report on drugs in 2010, North America is the leader in the Cocaine drug trade where 40%
of cocaine users reside – 196 tons of this pure substance was nccessary to satisfy the demand in 2008.
When taking seizures and purification operations etc into account, 309 tons was shipped from the country of origin
to North America. Findings regarding drug seizures in the United States reveals that the majority of cocaine
consumed in North America originates from Colombia.
It appears the North American market is declining. According to investigations conducted in the school sectors
and households, the criminal analysts observed a reduction in the number of cocaine users in North America.
This decrease has been particularly visible since 2006. The probable reason for this decrease in cocaine
consumption is the pressure exerted by detection operations, law enforcement and repression in Colombia and Mexico.
A decrease in demand in the American market should be accompanied by a rise in the price of cocaine. However,
instead of increasing the price, it is the purity of the product which has diminished considerably. In effect,
the American drug dealers prefer to reduce the quality of the cocaine to increasing its price. This appears to
have contributed to a decrease in user demand.
It must be noted that a decrease in cocaine use in North America does not signify a decrease in drug use overall.
