In the Last Decade, Drug Abuse has Increased in Canada

A large-scale study indicated, in the last decade,
Drug Abuse has Increased in Canada
A large-scale study examines the details of drug use in Canada.

A strong percentage of Canadians drink alcohol in moderation, however, over the past year, the daily recommended intake of alcohol has been exceeded by 23%.

The recommended weekly intake is 14 drinks for men and 9 drinks for women. Those who surpass this threshold are found in the following groups – men, Canadians between the ages of 18 and 24 years of age and those how are single.

The study also indicates that 45% of adult Canadians admit to having smoked marijuana at some point in their lives. The findings also reveal that 14% of people interviewed admit to having used cannabis within the last year, a figure that has doubled since 1994. Of this number, 18% consume everyday.

Cannabis use appears to rise with level of education. The findings reveal that of those who have not completed secondary school, 35% have used, compared to post-secondary at 52%, and 44% at university level. The percentage of those interviewed having used cannabis over their lifetime increased also with revenue, at 43% among those with a lower revenue, compared to 55% at a higher salary.

The increase in cannabis use, especially among the young has the specialists worried. According to the study, the findings suggest that 30% of people aged between 15 and 17 years and 47% of people between 18 and 19 years have used cannabis within the last year. As is the case with cigarettes, regular use of marijuana can lead to lung and throat cancer

The risks of emphysema and asthma are also highly increased. In addition, regular use can also cause memory loss, difficulty in expressing oneself, psychosis, and unsynchronized gestures and movement.

Cannabis is not the only illicit drug used by Canadians. In the course of a lifetime, 1 in 6 will use an illicit drug other than cannabis.  Over the last year, 3% of Canadians have used hallucinogens, cocaine, speed, heroin, and ecstacy. These users are primarily men and people aged between 18 and 24 years.  Consumption of these drugs can provoke serious and harmful consequences on the health and social life of the user and his entourage.
